2013 Urban Picnic Street Photography Competition Finalists

Matt Stuart

“I liked this shot for the geometry and spacing of all the elements as well as the moment.  The way that the horse and its owner have their own section, the dog and its owner placed inside the square of the truck, and of course the child looking back over all this confusing nonsense housed by the car. I also like the yellow ‘horizon’ line on the truck confirming to us all that the photographer managed to capture this wonderful moment whilst keeping the camera straight at the same time (quite hard to do!) The colours are pleasing and I keep coming back to the shot to follow the zig zag of characters that run throughout it. Generally when I am judging I always ask myself “do I wish I had taken it?” in this case I certainly wish I had.”

Eric Kim

“I love this photograph on many different layers (pun intended). I love the streamlined composition of the photograph (all elements moving in a diagonal from left to right) as well as how there are three main different “animals” in this shot (the horse on the far left, the dog jumping up, and the little girl looking disconcerted with her hair shooting up).

There is also great depth in the shot – with no main subjects overlapping with one another and with each subject filling its own quadrant. The colors are also well balanced (nice shades of green, blue, and hints of red) in the shot as well– and it is a unique shot I haven’t seen before.”

Matt Stuart Honourable Mention

Artur Eranosian

“It makes me smile. The angry lady in the foreground makes it, I also love the photographers confidence of shooting through what is probably the main subject and focusing on the reflected man. Is he in trouble too? are they related? What is he thinking about? and why is she so angry? Lots of unanswered questions and ambiguity. Key ingredients to great street photography.”

Eric Kim Honourable Mention

Colin Boyd Shafer

Eric Kim

“This is my second favorite photograph out of the ones I seen in this great competition. I love this shot because it shows four different subjects all wearing pink (perhaps for breast cancer awareness month?) Each subject moving from left to right is from a different world (the young girl, the older lady, the man with the turban, and the fascinating character on the far right with a nipple poking out). I think it is great to see all of these people from different social backgrounds bonding together, with of course the color pink unifying all of the characters.”

The UPSP competition is testament to the breadth and depth that this fascinating genre of photography offers. Matt and I had a tough time whittling the images down to the final 30, but all images in the selection are worthy of recognition. If ever anyone asks you 'what is street photography?', just send them to this page: it is representative of all that is great about street. Congratulations to all. With thanks to Matt Stuart and Eric Kim who took time out of their busy schedules to get involved and preside over the final decision. Rob, Matt and I are very grateful. Thanks, and look forward to continued uploads to the UPSP website!
